Talentless Nana: A Fitting End to a Great Season

Talentless Nana is a psychological thriller that has drawn comparisons with popular Shonen series like My Hero Academia and Death Note. The protagonist Nana is sent on an island to take on super powered individuals. She has been told that these individuals are enemies of humanity who are capable of killing millions. Talentless Nana is called Munou No Nana in Japanese. The word Munou translates to helpless. Although it can be translated into many ways, it signifies Nana's struggle against true evil.

Nana was focused throughout the series on her goals but changed her attitude towards Michiru later. She was dedicated to her goal of getting reliving the world from the enemy of humanity. She was able to kill her adversaries without remorse, but her relationship with Michiru changed her heart. She has failed to kill anyone ever since the invisible blade arc. Michiru has successfully transformed her with compassion and empathy. Ever since she was a young girl, she had no one to call a friend, but Michiru changed that by sticking by her side. Nana tried hard to resist the changes, but when Michiru made her realize that she was not responsible for her parent's death, it was no longer possible to avoid the change.

Nana always believed that the death of her parents was her mistake. She went outside her house and forgot to close the windows. Later it was told that the killer of her parents had entered through it and killed them. Nana always regretted her mistake, and it slowly made her bitter that the enemy of humanity succeeded only because she was foolish enough to give them a chance. However, Michiru was not convinced of the story. When Nana first told her, she spent a lot of time thinking about it. She later told Nana that it was very unlikely that the window was left open in the night. Since she was so young and her mother took care of her needs, most probably her mother had cleaned her room before going to sleep and closed the window as well.

Nana remembered that her room was clean the day her parents were murdered, so Michiru’s theory made more sense than what she had been told all these years. The realization that she probably had nothing to do with the death of their parents lifted a huge burden from her shoulders. Not just that, she finally realized how deeply Michiru cared for Nana’s feelings that she had spent days thinking over different possibilities just to ensure that Nana no longer had to blame herself for such a tragic event in her life.

Till now, Nana had always tried not to embrace her friendship with Michiru, but her kindness finally forced her to get over groundless fear and animosity. Nana had always believed that the powered individuals were the true enemy of humanity but that belief was now being directly challenged by a compassionate and kind Michiru. In the meantime, Kyoya is relentless in his pursuit of the new killer whose identity is unknown. He has no means of figuring out the motivations of the murder, so he has hardly made any progress. Nana, on the other hand, is too preoccupied with her newfound feelings, so she has neglected her duty of looking out for the murderer.

Luckily Jin has been alert all this time, and he tells Nana that Michiru is meeting someone to discuss something in the middle of the night by the beach. When Nana runs after Michiru, she suddenly receives a call from Tsuruoka, her mentor. Her posture immediately changes, and she seems fearful. Her mentor is manipulative and knows her weaknesses. The brief call reveals Nana’s kind and compassionate side as her mentor tells her that the funds that she set up for her adopted family are always in his control. Nana looks after others despite losing her own family at such a young age. Moreover, the viewers finally see some fear in her indicating that she not only respects Tsuruoka but is afraid of him.

It turns out that the new killer was Rentarou Tsurumigawa, who has the power of the Astral project. His spirit can leave his body and even interact with things. Although others can’t touch him, he can use physical objects to harm others. The only way one can stop him is by finding out and attacking his physical body. He has been using his powers for quite some time to harm innocent and beautiful things. He says that he loves doing it. Therefore, he murdered Ryuuji and the other animals in the forest before attacking Michiru.

As Rentarou was about to kill Michiru, Nana intervened to save her. Nana was stabbed in the process. She had been able to figure out that Rentarou was the killer because he was the only one who could have killed Mugino without ever going into his room. Nana is determined to save Michiru and lets Rentarou stab her several times to save her. She tells Michiru that she has been using her all this time to make her run away. She had already informed Kyoya about Rentarou, so she expected him to catch his physical form as soon as possible. In the meantime, she did everything possible to protect Michiru, even if it meant hurting herself. Rentarou was caught, but by that time, he had seriously injured Nana. Surprisingly, Michiru came back and healed her. Michiru’s healing abilities are limited, and if she uses them to save someone who is about to die, she puts her life in danger as well. Michiru’s sacrifice to save Nana is going to have long-term consequences for her friend. It is a fitting end for Nana, who has been indiscriminately murdering others but now has to deal with the death of a friend who made her believe in love and friendship.
