145 - SPANISH I

1 Credit

Grades 9 - 12                                                                                  

Students will learn the basic skills of speaking, listening comprehension, reading and writing through the use of a text, activities, oral repetition and written work.  They will learn the basic grammar and vocabulary enabling them to engage in simple conversation (i.e., about classes, family, weather and activities.)  The students will also learn about the geography and culture of Spanish-speaking countries through presentations, music, readings and videos. 1st semester Spanish I must be completed with a passing grade in order to continue on to 2nd semester Spanish I.  This course is a pre-requisite for Spanish II and must be passed with a minimum grade of C in the second semester to continue to Spanish II. 

                                                        

147 - SPANISH II

1 Credit

Grades 10 -12                                                                             

Students will increase their basic vocabulary and grammar including the past tense and commands.  Special emphasis is placed on listening and speaking.  Students will also practice and be assessed in writing and reading skills.  Topics include: ordering in a restaurant, daily routines, vacations, and others.  A primary method of teaching will be Total Physical Response Storytelling with a text, workbook, listening activities, and videos as support and resources.  Cultural information is woven in throughout the curriculum. Students must pass 1st semester Spanish II to continue into 2nd semester Spanish II.  Prerequisite:  This course is a prerequisite for Spanish III and must be passed with a C or better for the year in order to continue to Spanish III.

 

149 - SPANISH III

1 Credit

Grades 11-12                                                                     

This course expands language skills: adding vocabulary, learning new tenses and modes, increasing communication in reading, writing, listening, and speaking.  Topics included are art, discussing and reacting to news, sharing childhood experiences, medicine and health, and others.   Films and short novels are used along with texts and grammar workbooks. 

Prerequisite:  Completion of Spanish II with a C- or better for the year.

 

182 - SPANISH IV

1 Credit

Grade 12                                                                          

This course refines language skills: adding vocabulary, practicing the use of the tenses and modes learned in the first three years, adding small grammar details, increasing communication in all modalities: reading, writing, listening, and speaking.  Topics included are travel, future plans, geography and culture, interview skills, and others.   Journals, films, and short novels are used along with texts, grammar workbooks and an online component. 

Prerequisite:    Completion of Spanish III with a C or better for the year.
