Welcome Message
Welcome to our website!
You are extremely welcome to participate in the 2017 Annual Research Symposium on ASU campus, which will be held on March 15-16, 2017. In particular, you are highly encouraged to give a talk or poster presentation about your recent research achievements, ongoing research projects, and future research plans.
ASU's College of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (C-STEM) is pleased and proud to announce that the 2017 Annual Research Symposium will be held in the John Garrick Hardy Student Center on Wednesday, March 15 to Thursday, March 16, 2017. This year the Symposium is a collaborative effort with the College of Health Sciences (COHS). The theme of the Symposium is "Inspiring Students with Research in STEM Fields." In the year of 2017, ASU is celebrating the 150-year anniversary of legacy at this great institution. We will have a special session to recognize the ASU Sesquicentennial Celebration.
We are pleased to have received 76 abstracts (31 talks and 45 posters) presented by 38 research laboratories in 13 institutions from five states (Connecticut, Texas, Michigan, Indiana, and Alabama). These 38 presenting laboratories are composed of 23 ASU research groups and 15 external research units. The 13 institutions include Yale University, Prairie View A&M University, Indiana University School of Medicine, Michigan State University, University of Alabama, Auburn University, University of Alabama Birmingham, Tuskegee University, University of West Alabama, Huntingdon College, Auburn University Montgomery, Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences, and Alabama State University. In addition, eight participating collaborative institutions of these research groups are involved, such as Aston University (UK), the Chantal Biya International Reference Center for Research (Cameroon), Roudebush VA Medical Center in Indiana, Air Force Research Lab in New York, Michigan Technological University, Tulane University, University of Southern Mississippi, and University of South Carolina School of Medicine.
The Symposium presentations will provide the recent innovative efforts in STEM fields, including Mathematics, Microbiology, Cancer Biology, Physics, Chemistry, Photosynthesis, Forensic Science, Materials Science, Energy Sciences, Environmental Science, Health Sciences, Nanotechnology, Computer Engineering, and Biomedical Engineering.
The Plenary Speaker of the Symposium is Dr. Gary Brudvig, Benjamin Silliman Professor of Chemistry, Professor of Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry, at Yale University. Dr. Brudvig is an outstanding teacher, a top scientist, and a well-known world leader in Photosynthesis and Energy Sciences. The Symposium will have two Featured Speakers, the winner of the Faculty of the Year in STEM field, Dr. Shreekumar Pillai, and the winner of the Faculty of the Year in Health Sciences, Dr. Bridgette Stasher-Booker. Other speakers will include ASU faculty as well as the participants from University of Alabama, University of Alabama Birmingham, Tuskegee University, Auburn University Montgomery, and Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences. We are especially delighted to have Dr. Cajetan Akujuobi, the former dean of C-STEM and current Vice President for Research at Prairie View A&M University, to give a speech this year. We are also extremely happy to have an outstanding alumnus Dr. Thelma Ivery, the former dean of C-STEM, to join us to celebrate the ASU Sesquicentennial Anniversary.
Student talks will be given by postdoctoral researchers, Ph.D. students, M.S. students, and undergraduates. This year the Symposium Student Awards will be given to the outstanding student oral and poster presenters, judged by the Symposium Student Award Committee.
To enhance the communication and to promote possible collaboration among the participants, this year we will publish the outstanding innovative research results presented in the 2017 Annual Research Symposium in the peer-reviewed journal, "Frontiers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (FSTEM)." Each of the participants of the 2017 Annual Research Symposium is encouraged and invited to submit one manuscript on his or her presentation as a Research Paper or a Review Article for publication consideration.
The Symposium provides an excellent platform for undergraduate, graduate, and research scholars at Alabama State University as well as other universities in Alabama to share their research experience to broader audience. The Symposium will inspire the students in their future STEM endeavors and facilitate the collaborations among the faculty members in their respective fields. I believe that one of the most important goals of the Symposium is to celebrate the outstanding quality and diversity of faculty, graduate, and undergraduate research. Your participation is the key for the success of the Symposium.
We would like to deeply thank each of you for participation, which is the key for the successful Symposium. This year, in particular, we would like to thank the Deans, seven ASU program directors, two companies, and 17 individuals for financial support. We are very grateful to Latonia Harris, Sharifay McIver, David Campbell, Haley Cumbie, Gerald Cobb, Latonya Holmes, Lucas Banks and Tony Leary for assistance and support. Additionally, we really appreciate the previous chairs of the Symposium for support. Finally, not least, I greatly thank all the Symposiums Committee members for their dedications and efforts.
We are looking forward to seeing each of you during the Symposium!
