Personal Air Filtration DeviceĀ

A personal air filtration device or systems of utilizing the same as a surgical respirator are defined. The air stream passes through an activated filter. The activated filter can be a disposable point of entry filter disposed around an air permeable material of the head support to define a low pressure air zone around the user's air breathed zone. The delivered air stream can supply a fairly accurate laminar airflow around the user's whole body.

The pressure in this air can be measured with the aid of a digital readout on a hand-held device like a mouth guard or on a belt. In case of an emergency, a chest or abdominal protector can also come in handy as an added apparatus. This protective apparatus is known as a mask. The mask should fit comfortably over the nose and mouth parts to define a relatively low pressure area around the air leaks and the nose and mouth parts can function as an additional oxygen tank. It is vital that the mask fit properly since it functions as the filtration and purification mechanism for the wearer. Since the purpose of this respirator is to provide protection against diseases and infections spread by inhaling microorganisms, a good fit is essential.

A personal air filtration device may consist of a mask or a clean air filter bag attached to a facemask. The filtration can be done with or without the use of a respirator. With the use of a respirator, the filter bag acts as the filter and the mask acts as the face shield. The type of filtration system used depends on the degree of personal protection that is desired. Some people prefer a one-step system where only the mask and filter are used. This kind of personal air filtration system is effective for preventing the entry of dust, bacteria and viruses into the nose, throat and lungs.

On the other hand, some individuals who prefer more advanced personal air filtration devices choose a two-step system where the mask and the clean air filter bag are used simultaneously. With this system, the uppermost layer of the personal air filtration device, which is the mask, filters the microorganisms present in the air while the clean air filter bag traps these organisms in its filter. A series of electrodes are fitted in the personal air filtration device to catch the airborne particles. This system is more effective than the one-step system where only the mask and the filter are used.

One example of a personal filtration system that uses multiple filters is the HEPA filter. The name HEPA stands for "High Efficiency Particulate Air". A HEPA filter has very fine pores that allow very little amount of particles to pass through. This type of filtration system is commonly found in electronic appliances. The filtration of small particles such as dust, pollen and spores is more efficient with the use of a HEPA device than the reverse osmosis is because the pores of the reverse osmosis are very fine and the particles are often trapped in the lower part of the membrane, where they remain attached to tiny molecules.

A HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate) air purifier effectively cleans the air of all harmful microorganisms, which are known to cause health problems. With the introduction of HEPA technology, the price of air cleaner units has drastically reduced making them affordable even for households with less financially stable lifestyles. Using a HEPA filter also protects the respiratory health of people who suffer from allergies or asthma. For a heavy filter cartridge, which usually lasts for five years, this type of personal air filtration system can provide up to fifteen times more clean air than a normal air cleaner. Personal HEPA air cleaners are highly recommended for any household that requires the use of such a device.
