landscapes

The flatness and space of the Vale of York has its own magic. The trees stand as giant punctuation marks against the lines of crops and hedges. They are exposed and isolated, each developing their own character.

A selection of landscapes worked in a variety of media, mostly watercolour or oil. The paintings are done on location.

Pencil sketches come first, looking for composition and recording details. Some of the final paintings are done in one sitting keeping the immediacy of the sketches, others such as the 'Guarding Tree's are done more slowly over several days.

Most of the sketching I do currently is in preparation for textiles - a fact finding mission - recording structures, relationships or details,- not really intending to make 'finished' images.
