College Admission Tests

What Test Do I Need To Take?

If you are planning to apply to a 2yr or 4yr college or university, you will need to take the ACT or SAT. All juniors will take the ACT at West during second semester. It is NOT necessary to take both tests unless there is a specific need, such as applying to a highly selective college that prefers the SAT or a requirement as a semifinalist in the National Merit program. The SAT is offered at Wausau East.

Northcentral Technical College accepts ACT scores, as do other Wisconsin technical colleges.

ACT

The ACT assesses high school students' general educational development and their ability to complete college-level work. The test consists of 215 multiple choice questions in four areas : English, Mathematics, Reading and Science. An additional optional test, the Writing Test, measures skills in planning and writing a short essay. The composite maximum score is 36. Some colleges require students to take the Writing Test so be sure to check the admission guidelines. Since 2015, all juniors in Wisconsin are required to take the ACT plus Writing Test in the spring. The test takes place at school and is free.

How do I prepare for the ACT or SAT?

Check out these websites for free test prep materials. You can also pick up a practice booklet in the Counseling Office or Career Center. Test prep books are also available for checkout in the Counseling Office and Career Center.

Financial Aid

There are four* types of financial aid that you may qualify for to help pay for your college costs:

  1. Grants: Need based awards from both federal and state agencies that the student does not pay back (must complete FAFSA )

  2. Loans: Both need based and non-need based that the student pays back (must complete FAFSA)

  3. Work-Study: Job opportunities awarded based on need (must complete FAFSA)

  4. Scholarships: May be based on need, talent, academics, interests, career path, college, etc.

*Families may also explore private lenders for student loans. Be aware that interest rates may be high or adjustable, and that the loan terms and protections are not the same as federal loans.

Avoid Financial Aid Scams! Please note that you should NEVER pay to receive any financial aid assistance or information! If you are asked to pay for financial aid or scholarship assistance or applications either through a website or a workshop, please see your counselor or Career Center Coordinator. We can provide free access to financial aid information. Clink the link for more info.

Community Foundation Scholarships: These are scholarships available to students statewide, in Marathon County, or for Wausau West students.

TIP Grant: The TIP grant aids low-income and disadvantaged Wisconsin students with additional college funding to help reduce the student’s amount of loan, work-study, or unmet need. First-time freshman students are nominated for the TIP Grant by the school financial aid offices or by counselors of the Wisconsin Educational Opportunity Programs (WEOP).

Selective Service: All males must register for the Selective Service when they turn 18. Failure to register will result in up to a 5 year prison sentence or a $250,000 fine. Failure to register will also disqualify male students from qualifying for federal student loans or grants and state and federal jobs.

College Goal Wisconsin is an event that assists high school seniors with completing the FAFSA. All attendees will be entered into a scholarship drawing! No appointment is necessary, just show up for the event in the Wausau area. Check the link for the list of dates/times/locations.

Job Shadows

Job shadowing is a way to spend a few hours with a professional in a career that interests you. You can learn more about the job, the background or education needed for the position, and see what a typical day in that occupation involves. A job shadow is a one-day, two to three hour experience.

To sign up for a job shadow, see the Career Center Coordinator. You will be invited to a Job Shadow Workshop where you will be given the necessary forms and information to apply, schedule, and complete a job shadow.

Students are responsible for contacting potential job shadow sites. The Job Shadow Workshop will provide tips and suggestions for contacting local businesses and professionals. Students must meet with the Career Center Coordinator before setting up a job shadow during the school year. Job shadows that are arranged over the summer do not require the assistance of the Career Center Coordinator.

Military Options

There are five branches of the military that you may consider as a career option. They include the Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marine Corps and Navy in addition to their respective Guard and Reserve units. Local recruiters may visit Wausau West and be available to speak with students who are interested in learning more about career options and educational benefits.
