Ghost of Yōtei: Upcoming In 2025 Adventure Game Unveiled

We’re thrilled to unveil Ghost of Yōtei, the latest game from Sucker Punch, featuring our new hero, Atsu.

As we embarked on creating a new Ghost game, our goal was to preserve the core elements established in Ghost of Tsushima: embodying a wandering warrior in Feudal Japan, providing the freedom to explore at your own pace, and showcasing the stunning beauty of the world.

We also aimed to innovate. Instead of continuing Jin Sakai’s story on Tsushima, we shifted our focus to the concept of the Ghost. At Sucker Punch, we love origin stories, and we’re excited to explore what it means to have a new hero donning a Ghost mask and forging a new legend. This vision led us to Ghost of Yōtei: a fresh protagonist, an original story, and a new region of Japan to discover.

While we won’t delve into specific plot details just yet, we can share that Atsu’s journey unfolds in 1603, over 300 years after the events of Ghost of Tsushima. Set in the breathtaking lands surrounding Mount Yōtei, a majestic peak in Ezo (modern-day Hokkaido), this area was outside Japanese rule in 1603, characterized by vast grasslands, snowy tundras, and unique challenges. It’s a stark contrast to the organized samurai clans of Tsushima and sets the stage for an original narrative we’re eager to tell.

This marks Sucker Punch’s first game built from the ground up for PlayStation 5, and we’re excited to enhance the visual experience we established in Ghost of Tsushima. Expect expansive sightlines, stunning new skies filled with twinkling stars and auroras, realistic movement of wind through grass and vegetation, and more improvements we’ll share soon. Our new setting also allows us to introduce innovative mechanics, gameplay enhancements, and new weapons.

Today’s trailer offers a glimpse into this captivating world, but there’s so much more to reveal in the coming months, including insights into Atsu’s journey and the characters (and creatures) she will encounter. We are deeply grateful for the success of Ghost of Tsushima, and we can’t wait for you to experience Ghost of Yōtei in 2025.

As Sucker Punch’s first title designed for PlayStation 5, it will feature new mechanics, gameplay improvements, and an array of new weapons.

Inspired by the cinematic works of Akira Kurosawa and other samurai films, Ghost of Tsushima followed a samurai defending Tsushima Island during the first Mongol invasion of Japan. Released in July 2020 for PlayStation 4, it included a multiplayer mode, Ghost of Tsushima: Legends, later that year. A Director’s Cut followed in 2021 for PS4 and PS5, with a PC port launched last year.

A Ghost of Tsushima movie is also in the works with Sony Pictures and PlayStation Productions, directed by Chad Stahelski of John Wick fame.

IGN awarded Ghost of Tsushima a 9/10, praising it as "an absolutely gorgeous adventure through one of history’s most strikingly beautiful landscapes, complemented by one of the best blade-to-blade combat systems in the open-world action genre."

Interestingly, some scholars note that the year 1603 holds historical significance. It was the year before the Matsumae clan received exclusive trading rights with the Ainu people, marking a troubling shift for the Ainu, who would soon see their dominance in Hokkaido decline.

From 1604 onward, the Matsumae clan asserted themselves as representatives of the Japanese, restricting other clans from trading with the Ainu. What was once the Ainu's homeland transformed into a fishing hub within 200 years. Considering this context, Ghost of Yōtei may also explore themes of colonialism and Ainu revenge, though the plot remains a mystery for now.
