the genius under the table
by Eugene Yelchin
Young Yevgeny is not sure where he fits - in his family, at school, and in his country: Soviet Russia.
Yevgeny sleeps under his grandma's enormous old dining table. He doesn't mind. Before he goes to sleep each night, he secretly draws on the underside of the table with a pencil he stole from his father.
Desperate to please his parents and obtain some level of freedom and respect, Yevgeny attempts to cultivate a future with the Russian ballet (his mother speaks of the famous ballet dancer Mikhail Baryshnikov). Will this be Yevgeny's hidden talent? Or is it something else?
This book was a quick, entertaining, and funny read as well as a true story. Check it out!

when you trap a tiger
by Tae Keller
Would you try to catch a tiger if doing so could save someone you love?
When You Trap a Tiger begins with Lily, her older sister, Sam, and her mother driving on their way to live with their Halmoni (grandmother). On the drive, Lily sees a huge tiger in the road. Can that be? Halmoni always told her granddaughters ancient stories about tigers. What if they aren't just stories? Is Lily brave enough to find out?
Elements of family, heartbreak, and friendship are interwoven with fairytales to tell the story of Lily finding her voice even while suffering tremendous loss. I highly recommend this book!

fighting words
by Kimberly Brubaker Bradley
Fighting Words is heartbreaking, moving, and intense. It is the story of two sisters, told from the point of view of 10-year-old Della, about addiction, abuse, foster care, love, friendship, and, above, all, finding and using your voice to stand up for yourself and others.

dear justyce
By Nic Stone
Dear Justyce is the sequel to Dear Martin, also by Nic Stone. I highly recommend both titles! Both books are written as a series of letters and grapple with issues of systemic racism, friendship, family, and dreams for the future.
