Online Education team members present regular 30–90 minute workshops on topics ranging from technology to student engagement in the online classroom. We recognize that online pedagogies can be markedly distinct from best practices in the face-to-face classroom. We’re here to help you figure out how to best translate the unique features of your teaching style into the virtual setting.

For instructors seeking to build their skill set in a self-paced learning environment, we offer online courses about online teaching.

• Integrated Course Design for Remote Instruction (ICDRI) includes six modules that walk participants through the basics of designing online classes — from technology to community-building to pedagogy. Choose just the basics or dive into optional extra readings as you like.

• Canvas Basics provides a comprehensive introduction to the core functions of Canvas, UCSC’s LMS (Learning Management System). Designed with the new user in mind, Canvas Basics is the step-by-step guide you need to develop confidence with the platform.

• Our Hypothesis course introduces faculty to the collaborative annotation tool Hypothesis — an innovative means of encouraging students to engage with academic texts and with each other.

All of our regular workshops are also available for departmental trainings via Zoom (and in person when campus activities resume). If you and your colleagues are looking for guidance on Canvas, tools like Hypothesis, YuJa, and Gradescope, or course design, we will gladly work with you to create a custom session tailored to your department’s interests and disciplinary specifications.
