Canvas Support

The Canvas to SAM Gradebook grade passback is now available.  The directions are VERY important and MUST be followed EXACTLY or it won't work!!!!  There are some very specific things that must be configured in your Canvas grade book, and some very specific things that must be done for each assignment that you want to pass back to SAM.

Assignments will not automatically pass back to SAM.  You must manually set up each assignment you want to appear in the SAM gradebook.  You can edit an "old" assignment and sync it provided you move the assignment to the correct Canvas Assignment group and change the name of the assignment to match the SAM rules. The assignment must also be edited to ensure all of the other rules have been followed or the assignment will not pass back or it will pass back the incorrect grade.

Grades will only sync with the grade book overnight, so you cannot give a Canvas test in the morning and have it sync with SAM that afternoon.  Grades will not be available to students in SAM until the day after it is graded in Canvas.  Please help each other at school if you have issues!

PLEASE do not send all your assignments at once!  Try the process on a couple of assignments and then check SAM the next day to see how it looks.  Do this until you have the hang of it!  If you make a mistake, it will take a full day to correct the mistake!!!! 

Please use the "rule of three" as your first support option. If you can't get it to work, please ask three colleagues to look at your assignment setup in Canvas to see if you have an error!  Remember, it takes 24 hours for every change to show up in the SAM grade book!!!!

Creating and selecting other assignments to passback to SAM

Step One - Create Assignment Groups

Assignment groups must be created in Canvas that have EXACTLY the same name as the assignment groups in the SAM grade book, and all assignments that you want to pass back to SAM must be in these groups.  These groups should not be weighted in Canvas. They must be named Daily, Homework, Test.

Step Two - Create New Assignments or Rename and Move Existing Assignments

• Assignments must be created according to the rules stipulated by SAM.

• Assignments must include an “SS-“ before the title (Sample name: SS-Beowulf Vocab Quiz 1)

• Assignments titles must be under 128 characters

• Assignments must have a due date

• Assignment points must be greater than zero

• Assignments must have a SECTION ID associated with it.  Teachers cannot sync back manually entered records. (Translation?  You can't create a manual course or a manual section to group students.  You can only use the sections that come from SAM)

• Assignments and grades syncing back must be for a currently “unlocked” term. If they are for a “locked” term they will generate errors.

• Always make assignments either worth 100 points and/or choose the option to Display Grade as Percentage.  If you fail to do this, the grades will be wrong in SAM!

• You can sync existing assignments by changing the name, moving the assignment to one of the three new assignment groups, and following all of the rules above.

• To stop a grade syncing to SAM, you must remove the "SS-" in front of the assignment name.
