MakerLab

MakerLab & Makerspace Opportunities

Learning Technologies recently has created a MakerLab located in the Richel Computer Lab in Cremer Hall. The lab is open to everyone including students, faculty and staff! We have a variety of equipment available for you to experiment with. Some equipment includes a Makey Makey, RaspberryPi, SLA 3D Printer and PLA 3D Printer. Our Instructional Designers can help you with your 3D printing designs and can print anything for class or personal use. Take a look at some of our 3D printing resources:

3D Printing and Scanning

  • Learning Technologies has two different types of 3D printers: an SLA printer and several PLA printers. Each type of printer has its strengths and both are available for use from students and faculty, through the assistance of Learning Technologies and IT staff.

  • Learning Technologies has a 3D scanner that can be used to scan and create print files for objects that may not have plans available online.

  • Learning Technologies also has 3D laser cutting that can make an endless variety of useful, beautiful, and practical things from a bunch of different materials like wood, leather, felt, fabric, acrylic, paper, and more.

Virtual and Augmented Reality

Robotics and Coding

Learning Technologies has several cool robotics and introductory coding kits that are available for use.

  • MaKey MaKey is an invention kit that uses alligator clips and a small "board" to make connections that communicate with a computer or tablet.

  • RaspberryPi is a low cost, credit-card sized computer that plugs into a computer monitor or TV, and uses a standard keyboard and mouse. Its possibilities are limitless.

  • Ozobot uses specially colored markers and specific patterns to direct tiny robots along a certain path. It can teach things like basic coding, debugging, and cause and effect.

  • Bloxels is a hands-on coding platform used to build, collaborate, and tell stories through video game creation. Users arrange colored blocks to design characters and landscapes and then use an app to give life to their creations.

Makerspace Workshops

Learning Technologies is pleased to offer a series of Mini-Makerspace workshops! This is an opportunity for our team to come to your school or campus and provide you with Makerspace training. This will include hands-on active learning opportunities, overview of makerspace methodologies, step-by-step guide for organizing and sustaining a Makerspace at your institution or in your community and a variety of tinkering activities. Our team of Instructional Designers have been actively involved with the Makerspace movement and have shared their expertise at many local, state and regional conferences. Designers have also taught all-day workshops for the Jones Institute for Educational Effectiveness.

Our workshops will get your faculty and staff excited about solving problems and will channel their inner-Sherlock so that they can create inventors in the classroom. All of our sessions can be at your institution or ours - you choose! At the completion of the workshop, all participants will earn an Emporia State University microcredential certification through Credly. This certification can be shared via social media and used as a professional development tool. For more information on our Makerspace workshops, contact the IT Help Desk.
