What's happening in PE?

Striking Part 1

February saw students once again working on a variety of skills. 3-5 students got to work on skills involving the sport of badminton. These skills included serving and hitting the birdie with partners. The younger grades worked with volleyballs to help their catching and hand striking skills.

Nutrition/Jump Rope

In January, K-3 learned about nutrition and pedometers. Students discussed and played games based around energy, healthy food groups, and bad habits. Grades 4 and 5 worked on their jump roping skills as well as put those skills into a routine. Students then performed these routines in front of the PE teachers with a group of peers.

Jump Rope/Handball

December was a mixed bag for our grade levels as the primary grades practiced jump roping as the intermediate grades worked on Handball. Jump roping is one of our more difficult skills as it requires patience, timing, and perseverance. For the older grades, we layered overhand throwing with the game of handball. Students were introduced to the idea of strategy and tactics via moving around in open space and trying to find the open pass when holding the ball.

Overhand Throwing

During November, K-5 students worked on a very common skill in physical education. Overhand throwing is a gateway to many different sports and activities such as olympic throwing, pitching in baseball, cricket, and others.

Underhand Throwing

In the month of October, K-5 students worked on their underhand throwing skills by rolling, sliding, or throwing a variety of objects. This is an important skill that can translate to many activities such as bowling or corn hole and sport-specific actions like a softball pitch.
