Student Code of Conduct

All students are expected to adhere to the ABOR Student Code of Conduct. The aim of education is the intellectual, personal, social, and ethical development of the individual. The educational process is ideally conducted in an environment that encourages reasoned discourse, intellectual honesty, openness to constructive change, and respect for the rights of all individuals. Self -discipline and a respect for the rights of others in the university community are necessary for the fulfillment of such goals. The Student Code of Conduct is designed to promote this environment at Arizona State University.

The Student Code of Conduct sets forth the standards of conduct expected of students who choose to join the university community. Students who violate these standards will be subject to disciplinary sanctions in order to promote their own personal development, to protect the university community, and to maintain order and stability on campus.

NASW Code of ethics

All students are expected to abide by the NASW Code of Ethics. The NASW Code of Ethics is a set of standards that guide the professional conduct of social workers. The 2021 update includes language that addresses the importance of professional self-care. Moreover, revisions to Cultural Competence standard provide more explicit guidance to social workers. All social workers should review the new text and affirm their commitment to abide by the Code of Ethics. The NASW Code of Ethics is also available in Spanish.

The NASW Code of Ethics offers a set of values, principles and standards to guide decision-making and everyday professional conduct of social workers. It is relevant to all social workers and social work students regardless of their specific functions or settings.

All students are expected to abide by the ASU School of Social Work Standards of Ethical and Professional Behavior. Attainment of professional identity and skill as a social worker is a multifaceted process. Students are expected to participate centrally and meaningfully in the wide array of educational activities and to apply professional standards within all requirements of the ASU School of Social Work curriculum.

At the ASU School of Social Work, we value and respect every member of our community. This community is made up of individuals from both sexes, all races and ages, many ethnic groups, nationalities, and religions, representing a wide range of physical and mental abilities, gender identities and expressions, and heterosexual, bisexual, gay male and lesbian sexual orientations. The ASU School of Social Work is proud to affirm its commitment to a community in which all students, staff, and faculty are accepted and perceived as individuals, independent of ancestry, social background, physical characteristics, or personal beliefs.

The primary goal of the ASU School of Social Work is to educate social work students during their transition to a professional life. The ASU School of Social Work has an obligation to evaluate students pursuing the BSW, MSW, and PhD degrees as thoroughly as possible for their cognitive abilities, their academic and professional knowledge and skills, their integrity, and their suitability for the practice of social work.

Accordingly, the Standards of Professional and Ethical Behavior have been developed to guide the behavior of professional degree-seeking students of the ASU School of Social Work and to prepare the social work student to meet the ethical standards of the social work profession.
