Personal Finance

Personal Finance with Mr. Cotter

1) Our classroom has 3 principles:

#1 Respect “the Floor” (don’t talk while others are presenting)

#2 Respect each other & work together (when asked to)

#3 Stay on task (so no cell phones!)

If you can follow these 3 rules, we can promise we’ll have a great year!

2) What you’ll need to bring to class each day:

- Notebook and a folder for handouts & graphic organizers

- Pencil with an eraser

3) Your Current Grade is always available to you to view on engrade.com. Grades will be updated at the end of each week. Students and parents can access grades by visiting “engrade.com”, clicking on “join now”, and entering your personal access code (which you will be given during class.)

4) Class Participation will be a very important part of this class. Your class participation grade will be 30% of your overall grade. If you consistently follow our 3 classroom principles (20%)…and participate appropriately in the “first 5 and last 5” minutes of every class (10%), your classroom participation grade should be outstanding!

5) During the First 5 Minutes of class you will be given 4-5 “bell ringer” problems to work on. Please begin each class by entering the room quietly, finding your seat, putting your homework on your desk (for me to check), and doing your “bell ringer” problems in your notebook.

6) During the Last 5 minutes of class you will be given an “exit ticket” which will usually be 1-3 questions for you to answer. Once you finish your “exit ticket” you will hand it in to me and you will receive your homework for the evening. Once you receive your homework you will be expected to return to your seat and begin working on it for the remainder of the class (this is a great time for you to see if you have any questions on the homework.)

7) Homework will be assigned almost every day (very often it will be "Classwork/Homework", so you'll have the opportunity to finish it in class if you use your class time wisely). Homework will be graded on a scale of 0-4 (week night HW) and 0-8 (shop week HW) and it will account for 20% of your term grade. If you are absent, you are responsible for making up any assignments you missed.

8) “Flipped Classroom” (Shop-week Homework) during shop-week you will be expected to watch & take notes on some instructional videos which can be found online.

9) Most quizzes and tests will take place during the last class of the week (usually Fridays). If you are absent on test day, you need to make the test after school during shop week. It is your responsibility to make up your test. I won’t chase you around the school to make sure you do it!

10) Extra help is always available and encouraged. With few exceptions, it is available after school on Tuesdays (Wednesday if Mr. C has a meeting on Tuesday…I’ll let you know if I do) and Thursdays. It is YOUR responsibility to seek out extra help; we will NOT chase you down to set up an extra help session.

Also...there are typically a lot of students, from a variety of different classes attending extra help sessions. Therefore, you must come prepared with questions and work to do. It is completely appropriate for you to come to extra help and say “ I need help with problems #3 and #7 from last night’s homework,” but it is not OK for come in and say, “I’m here. What do you want me to do now?”

Please…come to extra help sessions prepared!

11) Cheating: Please do not cheat or plagiarize. You will receive an F on the material you cheated on and a 0 will be factored into your grade. All cheating will be reported to the Academic Director for disciplinary action.

12) Detentions: If we feel as though your behavior is interfering with our ability to learn, we may assign you a detention. Our goal in assigning a detention will be for us to work out a solution that will allow you and the rest of the class to learn more effectively, without disruptions. If our solution proves ineffective, you may be assigned and administrative detention or Saturday School.

13) All parents and students are encouraged to visit our class website at https://sites.google.com/a/assabet.org/aztec-math-with-mr-cotter/home which can also be found on the school’s website
