Our new branding packs for the University of York Students' Union will be sent to University staff and student groups.

01 July:

Our Sabbatical Officer structure will be changing. Find out more below.

29 July:

01 August:

Our Name

Our name is the ‘University of York Students’ Union’

If necessary, this can then be shortened to ‘York Students’ Union’. In content that requires really short sentences or copy ‘York SU’ or ‘YorkSU’ can be used.

‘YUSU’, ‘UYSU’, or ‘YSU’ will never be used.

Never shorten our name to ‘UoY SU’ or ‘UoY Students’ Union’.

New Officer Structure

A big part of the Students' Union is representation. With us, students can campaign on issues important to them, represent their peers, and be a part of the decision-making process and direction of the Union. Below you'll find a breakdown of how our representation structure is changing. Notably, the number of Sabbatical Officers is changing as well as how we approach academic representation and the representation of students from marginalised communities.

From 01 July, our Sabbatical Officer structure will be changing:

We now have seven full-time Sabbatical Officers, along with an Academic Committee, an Equalities Committee, and SUmmit, who all work together to decide the direction of the Union and create positive change.

SUmmit

SUmmit is the political body of the Union and is made up of the seven elected Sabbatical Officers, members of the Equalities Committee and members of the Academic Committee. SUmmit exists to campaign on student issues, foster an inclusive campus, and amplify student voices.

Equalities Committee

The Equalities Committee is made up of students who are from historically marginalised communities. Students are elected onto the Committee, advocating for students of varying intersectionalities and sharing lived experiences to inform Union activity.

Academic Committee

The Academic Committee is made up of students who are from all different learner types at the University (for example, distance learners, part-time learners, undergraduates and postgraduates). Students are elected onto the Committee and are dedicated to ensuring that all students are represented by the Union and its activities.

Are these committees replacing anything or are they an addition?

These committees are replacing Part-Time Officers and their networks (for example Environment and Ethics Network, Disabled Students' Network) and Officer Group (which is made up of these Officers and Sabbatical Officers).

When will these roles be filled?

Our new Sabbatical Officer team was elected back in April. Nominations for positions on these committees will take place in weeks 2 & 3 of the new academic year, voting will open in week 5, and training will commence in week 6.

York SU Advice and Support

The Advice and Support Centre is a central part of the Students' Union offering. It is currently called the Advice and Support Centre, or ASC. As part of the rebrand, it will now be called York SU Advice and Support.

As something so central to the Students' Union, it is possible that you have both print and digital materials that point to this service. If you do have any documents, information or guidance that signposts students to the Advice & Support Centre (ASC) at either YUSU or the Graduate Students’ Association’s advice service, this can be updated with the following information and contact details from 1 August:

York SU Advice & Support provides independent and confidential advice and guidance to students on academic issues, University policies and procedures, and personal and wellbeing issues.
