The 4th Global Ministerial Conference on Road Safety, set for February 17-20, 2025, in Marrakech, Morocco, will bring together global leaders, policymakers, and road safety advocates to address the urgent need for safer roads worldwide. This conference aims to advance commitments from the Global Plan for the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021-2030, focusing on halving road traffic deaths and injuries by 2030. The Ministerial Conference seeks to catalyze transformative actions that promote safe and sustainable mobility for all by fostering collaboration, sharing best practices, and highlighting evidence-based strategies.
Join Our Call for Global Road Safety!
We are a collaboration of civil society organizations working in road safety and safe mobility, committed to advancing global road safety. Our goal is to support governments in achieving UN Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 3.6: "By 2030, halve the number of global deaths and injuries from road traffic crashes." As the 4th Global Ministerial Conference on Road Safety approaches, we urge global leaders to strengthen their commitment to saving lives and creating safer roads for everyone.
Open Letter to Global Leaders on Road Safety and Sustainable Mobility
We, the United Nations Road Safety Collaboration members, urgently call on global leaders to take immediate action to address the global road safety crisis. Together, we can achieve the UN Sustainable Development Goal 3.6: to halve global road traffic deaths and injuries by 2030.
The current state of road safety is dire. While global road traffic deaths have decreased by 5% since 2010, road crashes remain the leading cause of death for young people aged 5-29, particularly affecting low- and middle-income countries. Each life lost represents a personal tragedy and highlights a significant equity issue, as the most vulnerable are often those at the highest risk.
The economic and social impact of road crashes is profound. The global cost is estimated at up to $3.6 trillion, or 3-5% of GDP in many countries, leading to job loss, debt, and lasting physical and psychological harm. Without bold interventions, these costs will only continue to grow.
We call on global leaders to:
Prioritize road safety funding at national and international levels.
Implement evidence-based interventions, including infrastructure improvements, speed management, and enhanced protection for pedestrians and cyclists.
Engage civil society, especially youth, road victims, and NGOs, to ensure diverse voices are included in road safety decisions.
Commit to specific, measurable actions to be presented at the upcoming 4th Global Ministerial Conference on Road Safety in Marrakech, Morocco.
Now is the time to act. We stand ready to support leaders in achieving safer, sustainable mobility for all.
