Science

We don't have opinions as scientists. We have facts and evidence.

"Science is not belief, but the will to find out." -Anon

"Climate is what we expect, weather is what we get." - Mark Twain

"If you wish to understand the Universe, think of energy, frequency, and vibration." - Nikola Tesla

Icons and image are of St. Albert the Great- patron saint of scientists. Feast Day- November 15.

Children are natural scientists; they are curious about the world around them and often puzzled at how things work. Their observations can lead to questions on how the world operates and functions. Ever curious about their world, children instinctively try to answer their scientifically oriented questions by looking for patterns and casual relationships.

What we are learning in grade 3:

We have learned and reviewed the following in Quarter 1:

  • The Scientific Method (including Lab Safety, Lab tools, measuring in the metric system, and using & collecting data)

  • The Engineering and Design Process (including using Technology). We designed ways to strengthen our bridge to enable a toy car to cross it without it collapsing.

We have learned and reviewed the following in Quarter 2:

  • We are learning about the Earth's Resources (Unit 3)

    • how to identify and understand natural resources

    • how to conserve resources and the 3 R's of recycling

    • understanding the differences between minerals and rocks

    • what makes up soil and the 3 different layers of soil

    • the different types of soil and their characteristics

    • composting and that it helps the soil

We have learned and reviewed the following in Quarter 3:

What we are learning in grade 4:

We have learned and reviewed the following in Quarter 1:

  • The Scientific Method (including Lab Safety, Lab tools, measuring in the metric system, doing virtual labs, and using & collecting data)

  • The Engineering and Design Process (including using Technology). We designed a way to protect an egg when dropped from over 5 meters high.

We have learned and reviewed the following in Quarter 2:

  • We are learning about the Earth's surface (Unit 3)

    • The water cycle

    • weathering and erosion and how it shapes the earth, including glaciers

    • features found on earth's surface, such as landforms

    • how water changes Earth's surface

    • changes that happen slowly or quickly on the surface or beneath the surface of the Earth

    • what a seismologist is and their role in geology

    • the Ring of Fire and where it is found (Pacific Ocean)

  • We are learning about Living Things and their environment (Unit 4)

-how living things are adapted to their environment due to physical or or behavioral adaptations

- water covers 70% of Earth and land covers 30% of Earth

- all living things need food, water, air, and shelter to survive

- Earth has many types of environments (arctic, tropical rainforest, oceanic, dry, hot, cold)

We have learned and reviewed the following in Quarter 3:
