YCSD Library Media Department Mission Statement

The mission of the YCSD K-12 Library Media Center program is to instill empathy in our students through quality literature and eSTEAM and to build their skills in information literacy and technology. This will prepare our students to succeed in a complex global society, while helping them to develop into enthusiastic lifelong readers and learners.

Information literacy skills are introduced to students in the elementary grades and then expanded and reinforced throughout middle school and high school. Students learn to select appropriate sources from a variety of online subscription databases and the Internet, access information using effective search strategies, critically evaluate information, cite sources in proper bibliographic format, present information and create knowledge using a variety of multimedia formats, and become ethical users of information.

To fulfill this mission, we have developed the following goals:

  • Continue to assist teachers in implementing literacy strategies for reading and writing instruction. (K-5)
  • Expand and extend collaboration with classroom teachers in support of the curriculum, at the time of need.
  • Explore the use of blogs, wikis, podcasts, and RSS feeds in order to integrate collaborative Web 2.0 technology into the library media center program, as appropriate.
  • Take advantage of professional development opportunities to explore new and emerging technologies and how they can be used effectively in teaching and learning.

AASL Standards:

The Library Media Center K-12 curriculum is guided by the “Standards for the 21st-Century Learner,” which were established in 2008 by the American Association of

School Librarians, a division of the American Library Association: (The complete Standards for the 21st-Century Learner are included in our list of Resources.)

Learners use skills, resources, and tools to:

  • Inquire, think critically, and gain knowledge.
  • Draw conclusions, make informed decisions, apply knowledge to new situations, and create new knowledge.
  • Share knowledge and participate ethically and productively as members of our democratic society.
  • Pursue personal and aesthetic growth.
