Superintendent's Student Councils Get to Work
The newly formed Superintendent’s Student Councils at Yorktown High School and Mildred E. Strang Middle School are already generating great ideas to enhance student life!
Working closely with Dr. Hattar and school administrators, these councils, made up of student representatives from each grade level, have identified key areas for improvement and begun shaping actionable goals for the school year. Underpinning the work with students is the development of leadership skills and relationship building.
In their first meeting, students collaborated in grade-level groups to discuss what they love about their schools and what could be improved. Suggestions included paving the commuter lot, extending café hours, adding more after-school buses, reducing overlapping test schedules, a review of grading, and facilitating a more seamless transition from middle school to high school.
By the second meeting, the councils had refined their ideas into three main goals to focus on for the school year. Now, they’re developing plans to implement these changes, fostering leadership, teamwork, and critical thinking skills along the way.
The councils will meet again after the holiday recess to continue their work. We look forward to sharing their progress throughout the school year!
