Since the start of the school year, Whitsons Culinary Group has successfully taken over as the District’s food-service provider, maintaining a strong focus on student wellness.
Selected after a competitive rebidding process to ensure taxpayers are receiving the best possible value, Whitsons won the contract by offering the lowest pricing structure while meeting the District’s high nutritional standards. The food service transition was discussed at the Board of Education meeting on September 23.
Superintendent Dr. Ron Hattar emphasized the District’s commitment to student wellness, a priority highlighted in the Board of Education's 2024-25 Areas of Focus. He noted, “We are proud of the nutritional standards we meet and the high-quality ingredients used.”
The district’s director of wellness, Laura Tolosi, played a vital role in crafting bid specifications to retain the majority of the district's beloved food-service staff, ensuring that the transition would maintain familiarity for students.
Gerrie Muccitelli, who was recently promoted to Director of Food Service, has been a familiar face in the district for 21 years. Having spent many years working under the previous food-service provider, Gerrie chose to stay with Yorktown when Whitsons took over. “Yorktown is my home, and it's where I belong,” Gerrie shared during the meeting. “I have an amazing staff and I work with wonderful administrators. I just want to thank you so much for allowing me to continue working at a district that I love.”
Gerrie’s leadership extends beyond logistics — she engages directly with students and even hosts tastings. Student feedback helps shape upcoming menus, ensuring the cafeteria offerings reflect the preferences of those they serve. “There's an ownership of the menu, and a pride in what we offer,” Dr. Hattar added, describing it as a core part of #TheYorktownDifference.
Whitsons maintains the district’s high standards of cleanliness and service, with regular inspections. Families can expect base meal prices of $3.15 at the middle and high schools and $2.95 for elementary students, with additional a la carte items available.
Whitsons also offers interactive menus at www.fdmealplanner.com, making it easy to access ingredient and nutritional information. For convenience, we will also continue posting PDF versions of the lunch menus directly to our website.
