On November 4, sixth graders from Mildred E. Strang Middle School presented "Project Lead the Way" to the Yorktown CSD Board of Education. This new ESTEAM course marks the first year of engineering at MESMS.
Students shared their experiences tackling real-world challenges, like designing wind turbines, building solar power models, and creating penguin habitats. Through hands-on projects, they’re exploring the impact of energy on the environment, building problem-solving skills, and learning about engineering careers.
Dr. Hattar commended the students on their confidence and collaboration, noting that their communication skills were just as impressive as their engineering work. He added, "This project is out-of-this-world impressive!”
Students were asked why they signed up for this elective course, with one student remarking, "We love Project Lead the Way because it helps us understand how energy impacts the environment and it's fun to build and design."
Another student added, "The E part of ESTEAM, I wanted to find out what it’s all about."
ESTEAM is Yorktown CSD's award-winning approach to learning that places empathy at the forefront of science, technology, engineering, arts, and math. It's so exciting to see ESTEAM in action at MESMS!
