Crompond fifth-graders stole the show at the December 2 Board of Education meeting with reflections from their recent English Language Arts unit on human rights and overcoming challenges.
Using the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) as a foundation, students explored themes of courage, kindness, and community through the lives of figures like Malala Yousafzai, Eleanor Roosevelt, and others. They connected these lessons to #TheYorktownDifference, this year’s district-wide theme celebrating what makes Yorktown a special place.
The presentations highlighted the students’ creativity, collaboration, and empathy. From designing educational games using Breakout EDU to creating digital projects with Canva, each class approached the unit in unique and innovative ways.
One student reflected, “In our classroom, we try to treat each other kindly and make sure that everyone has a chance to learn. Just like the UDHR says, we have the right to be in a safe and fair space where we can speak our thoughts and ask questions.” Another shared why the UDHR reminds them of the Yorktown Difference: “Because here in Yorktown, we are learning to respect others.”
Superintendent Dr. Ron Hattar praised the students’ efforts, noting their thoughtful reflections, creative projects, and impressive public speaking skills.
