YHS Junior Joins Elite Columbia Science Honors Program

Congratulations to Amani Gupta, a junior in the Yorktown High School Science Research Program, on being accepted into the Columbia Science Honors Program!

This highly competitive program is specifically designed for high school students in grades 10 through 12 who have a strong interest in the sciences and mathematics. The program allows students to work directly with college professors and take courses at Columbia University.

“The Columbia Science Honors Program (SHP) is known for its low acceptance rate and its experiences working with highly educated professors. When seeing that I was eligible to apply for this program, I immediately knew that this would be an amazing opportunity to broaden my knowledge in the STEM field. In order to qualify for this program, you need to write several essays, as well as complete a 100-question test. To study, I went through materials on Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Mathematics. I also had to expand my knowledge on the classes that were being offered, since many of the topics covered need an initial background with that topic. Overall, the preparation process was tough, but worth it, and I truly recommend going through this rigor in order to work side-by-side with Columbia professors.”

“I'm specifically excited to take a class called ‘Classical and Quantum Computing Devices.’ This is because my Science Research project is centered around quantum algorithms, and taking this class would help to increase my knowledge on this complex topic. I'm also excited to delve deeper into the art of algorithms in Java and Python, since I've only been introduced to the basics of both languages. This program will definitely help to shape my academic and career path in the future. Not only is it a highly prestigious program, known to be one of the most elite science and math-focused high school honors programs in the country, but it will also introduce me to many other students who share the same passion as me. Many other students in Yorktown High School who have a passion in STEM and are looking for an opportunity to work with real college professors, learn new things, and challenge themselves should 100 percent consider applying to this program.”
