Mohansic Elementary School is partnering with a local charity organization to make the holidays a little brighter for active-duty military members.
In the weeks leading up to Veterans Day, our second-grade students worked with Ms. Yates and Ms. Roper to prepare care packages filled with handwritten letters, hand-drawn patriotic symbols, and donated items, which will be sent overseas by United For The Troops, a local charity.
Jim Rathschmidt, the organization’s founder, stopped by Mohansic yesterday to collect the care packages. He told the students that the soldiers will be delighted to receive their items. “You don’t know where it’s going and they don’t know where it’s coming from. But they know it’s coming from someone in the United States who cares about them.”
The Veterans Day assembly was then turned over to Military Order of the Purple Heart Chapter 21, whose members shared stories about their time in the military and answered questions from curious second graders. The students made sure to thank the veterans for their service!
