No football game at Charlie Murphy Field is complete without the sounds of the Yorktown High School band. Their melodies set the stage for each play and boost school spirit, leading to an electric atmosphere on Friday nights.
We caught up with a few band members who were excited to share their thoughts. Senior Kevin Griffiths thinks the football season kicks off the school year perfectly. “It definitely represents school spirit and the teams recognize that.” He emphasizes the crucial roles that both the band and the cheer team play in creating an exciting atmosphere.
George Whalen, another senior, loves being in the middle of the action. “I think the band is a central part of the event. The band just gives me a community that I really enjoy.”
Junior Sharik Bose feels a strong sense of unity at Charlie Murphy Field. “I like how we come together as a band family.” Bose also highlights an essential part of their performance — its role in promoting the band to the younger grades.
You don’t have to know all the rules to have a blast, according to junior Maria Rizzo. “You don’t really have to understand football to have a good time making a lot of noise and having a lot of fun.” She underscores the environment that the band aims to create, promoting a sense of family within the band.
