Midway through his senior season, Will McCarthy competed in his first-ever steeplechase event. Four races later, he’s a section champion and school record holder.
In the Section 1 State Qualifier last week, Will ran the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 10:00.47 – the fastest time in school history. He also earned a first-place finish and a spot in the New York State Championships, which are scheduled to take place this weekend at Middletown High School.
Already an accomplished distance runner for the Huskers, Will only recently made the switch to the steeplechase, a race that incorporates obstacles such as water ditches and fences.
“I found it easier to stay focused during a race when there are barriers in my way that I have to hurdle. I also thought it was just fun,” Will said. “I came into this race looking for the school record. At the time I thought I was shooting too high, but after it became a reality, I was thrilled to have broken it along with a section title.”
It is a fitting end to Will’s track and field career, which began as a freshman. The outgoing senior credits his success to the support, patience, and guidance of his coaches, Coach Smith and Coach Korn.
As he approaches the end of his high school career, Will feels a sense of fulfillment and accomplishment. “It feels like I've completed my high school career the way it was meant to be,” he shared. “My time as a Husker feels complete, and that's the best way it could have ended.”
