Peter Rabbit… guilty or not guilty?
The fictional character was put on trial for the crime of stealing vegetables from Mr. McGregor's garden and it was up to a jury of Mohansic first graders to decide his fate.
The May 1 mock trial was held in Yorktown Justice Court and presided over by Town Justice Gary Raniolo. After seeing evidence, hearing from witnesses, and listening to both sides, the students deliberated and declared Peter Rabbit guilty!
The annual Law Day event organized by Mrs. Cusano is an exciting way for the students to learn about the legal system. Attorney Gary Cusano, Police Chief Robert Noble, and Town Supervisor Tom Diana spoke about the importance of laws and the consequences of breaking them. Students also learned about the roles of police, lawyers, and judges.
Following the verdict, the students were given a tour of the courthouse, including the holding cell, the judge's chambers, and the jury room.
