Many know him as Officer Mundy. Some know him as Coach Mundy. But now he’s adopted another moniker: The Voice of the Huskers.
Brian Mundy, the school resource officer at elementary schools and former coach of the varsity girls basketball team, has taken on play-by-play duties for select Huskers home games. In the fall, he called several live broadcasts of varsity football games on Team1Sports.com.
This winter, Officer Mundy has continued to do play-by-play for most home games for the boys and girls varsity basketball teams. A one-man show, Officer Mundy is also responsible for on-air graphics, scores, and replays (but he’s looking for high school students to help him out!).
Being behind the microphone is nothing new for Officer Mundy, who worked in sports before beginning a career in law enforcement. He was once the sports editor of a weekly newspaper on Long Island, worked in media relations for a Minor League Baseball team (Daytona Cubs), and was the assistant athletic director and sports information director at Pace University. In fact, he has been broadcasting athletic events since he was a college student at SUNY Brockport.
Officer Mundy, who is in his 15th year at YCSD, said he took a step back from coaching to spend more time with his family. However, he still wanted to be a part of the Huskers sports community.
“I’m a sports nut,” he said. “I just can’t stay away from it.”
Broadcasting also has another benefit, Officer Mundy added.
“It's nice to be able to promote Yorktown's, and even the visiting team's, student-athletes to the viewers. Some kids use these videos to help with college recruiting and some might just save them for nostalgia. Maybe someday they'll look back on this high school experience and enjoy playing back some of these games to their families.”
