Students at Brookside Elementary School already know how the holidays are celebrated in Yorktown. But what about in South America? Or Europe? Or Africa?
On Thursday, December 1, students explored the “Holidays Around the World” with Beth & Scott, a husband-and-wife musical duo who performed original songs.
Not only did the students learn more about Christmas, Hanukkah, and Kwanzaa, but they learned how different cultures and countries celebrate these holidays.
Assistant Principal Dr. Denise Sandor said, “We learned how Swedish people celebrate the holidays. We learned how some South American countries celebrate their holidays. It just widens their world. Even though you may celebrate the same holidays, it's done differently in different cultures and different languages.”
Brookside’s first school-wide assembly in nearly three years was a memorable one for students, who were excited to dance to Beth & Scott’s holiday-themed songs, some of which were sung in different languages.
“The students loved it,” Dr. Sandor concluded.
