As the Yorktown Dance Company prepares to take center stage this weekend for its annual showcase, one of its former members is soaring to success in the fitness industry.

We recently caught up with the Class of 2010’s Colette Dong, whose passion for movement led her to co-found The Ness, which offers classes both online and in her New York City studio. Colette and her innovative workout method, which incorporates trampoline exercises, were recently featured on “The Drew Barrymore Show” and in the New York Times.

How and when did you develop your passion for dance and fitness? When did you know that you wanted to turn that passion into a career?

I started dancing when I was 3 and continued my training throughout high school and college. I started to become interested in fitness in high school and would go to the local Club Fit before or after dance classes. I knew I wanted to turn my passion for movement into a career toward the end of my junior year at YHS when I started auditioning for dance programs across the country. I decided on Elon University, where I was able to get my BFA in Dance Performance and Choreography and BS in Dance Science, which is Exercise Science with a dance focus.

Did you participate in any dance/fitness-related activities during your time at Yorktown Central School District? Do you have any fond memories or favorite educators?

Yes! I did Dance Company with Mrs. Dwyer. I had a pretty rigorous training schedule outside of school so I always appreciated how she let me participate in Dance Company even though I couldn't make all of the rehearsals. The show was always really fun because I got to dance with my classmates outside of a pre-professional setting. I took a nutrition class as well, which I remember really enjoying. Ms. Verdicchio and Principal DeGennaro were also very supportive of my dance career. They both gave me recommendations for all of the programs I was auditioning for and helped me catch up on work if I had to miss class because of a performance or rehearsal.

Do you have any advice for aspiring entrepreneurs?

I would say recreation creates ideation, so don't be afraid to try a lot of different things out. It's very much like riding a bike. You can read a book on how to do it, but you won't actually know how until you figure out how to balance your own weight and propel yourself forward. There are some things in life you can only learn by doing, so just dive in and start somewhere.
