The District will provide a safe and economical transportation system at District expense for those students who are eligible.
The voters of the District may authorize transportation of District children to schools they legally attend for lesser distances than that required by the Education Law. This policy will be implemented on a uniform basis and apply to District children attending public and nonpublic schools.
Under the administrative direction of the Superintendent, the Assistant Superintendent for Business and Assistant Supervisor of Transportation will develop and administer a total school transportation system which will include transporting students to and from school on their designated school days, and providing transportation for field trips and other trips which support the curriculum and/or extracurricular program. The transportation system will be:
operated so as to be efficient and economical with the safety and welfare of the student riders as a prime consideration;
adapted to the demands of the instructional program;
reviewed at least once a year to ensure that maximum efficiency and safety are maintained;
in compliance with all applicable laws, regulations, and policies established by federal, state, and local authorities.
The Assistant Supervisor of Transportation and Assistant Superintendent for Business will establish bus routes. Authorized bus stops will be located at intervals in places where students may safely embark and disembark the buses. The District is responsible for the safety of the children from the time they board the bus until the time they are discharged from the bus at their designated bus stop. It is the parent's responsibility to provide for the safety of the children at the bus stops prior to the child boarding the bus in the morning and after the child is discharged in the afternoon.
Since safety and welfare of all students is a prime consideration in the transportation operation, the only items that may be carried by a passenger to and from school are those that can be carried so as to not interfere with other passengers’ safety or access to safety exits. Absolutely no items may be placed in the aisles of buses.
