Voter Registration/Pre-Registration for Students

The High School Principal, in collaboration with the Superintendent, will offer all qualified students who are at least 16 years old (but will not be 18 years old by the next election) opportunities to pre-register to vote. Qualified students who are or will be at least 18 years old by the next election will be offered opportunities to register to vote. The students who pre-register will be automatically registered upon reaching the age of eligibility following verification of the person’s qualifications and address.

The District will provide students with access to voter registration and pre-registration applications during the school year, and assistance with filing such applications. The District will inform students of the state requirements for voter registration and pre-registration. The District will meet these obligations by inviting students to register or pre-register on their 16th, 17th, and 18th birthday; offering registration and pre-registration materials through homeroom/other required class at different times during the year; offering registration and pre-registration materials at a participation in government program; displaying voter registration and pre-registration posters and applications in the school office; hosting voter registration and pre-registration events throughout the year (such as at student government events, showing election- or politics-themed movies after school), etc.

Registration or pre-registration by students is voluntary and no student will be penalized for choosing not to do so. Registration/Pre-registration will not be a course requirement or a graded assignment.
