Return of Student Work

The District requires that essays, tests, quizzes, homework assignments, projects, and artistic work done by students will be evaluated by teachers and returned to students in a timely fashion.

Tests

  • Teachers will grade and return all tests/quizzes included in a student’s grade, except for the final exam and/or regents exam, within a reasonable amount of time.

  • Pre-assessments (e.g. pretests, pre-unit writing, baseline essays) and mid-terms may be re-collected and retained by the teacher.

  • Finals and Regents exams are exempt from review and return; however, students or parents shall be permitted to review these tests in school upon request.

  • Teachers will make themselves available to any student or parent who has concerns about the validity, reliability, fairness, or appropriateness of any test or test question. If such discussion does not resolve concerns, the student and/or parent may pursue the matter further with the building administrators.

Copies of Student Work

  • In those classes or situations where teachers might want to retain copies of student work (to discourage plagiarism), students may be asked to submit two copies of the assignment. Teachers will make accommodations for the copying of student work if necessary. One copy will be evaluated and returned in a timely fashion to the student; the second copy will be retained by the teacher for future reference.

  • With the permission of the student, and parent (if the student is under 18), teachers may use copies of student work as a model of excellence at a later time.

Governmental, Publishers’ and Institutional Requirements

  • In accordance with New York State law, Regents science lab reports will be retained by the school. Upon parental request, lab reports will be made available for parental review, and will be retained by the school as required by law.

  • Teachers will follow institutional, governmental and publishers’ requirements regarding retention of secure materials and/or student work products. Examples include Syracuse University Project Advance materials, Secure Regents exams, CTBS, Title 1 requirements, New York State Assessments, etc.

Inquiries regarding the return of student work should be addressed to the teacher. If the response is not satisfactory, then the matter should be addressed to the building administration.
