School Volunteers
Volunteers may be involved in a variety of school activities. Every effort will be made to ensure that volunteers will not have unsupervised direct contact with students.
Use of volunteers will not conflict with or replace any duly appointed and/or authorized District personnel or the duties/job responsibilities of such personnel.
Volunteers may not access student information/records. In the event that a volunteer becomes aware of student information/records, the volunteer must maintain the confidentiality of all information learned about students and the school.
Volunteers may not be assigned the responsibility for disciplining students but may assist the teacher in maintaining proper behavior of students and report behavioral problems to the teacher.
Volunteers may not supervise a class in the absence of the teacher.
Volunteers may not contact parents regarding the performance of students.
Volunteers must sign in and sign out of the building in which they volunteer at all times.
School personnel who are responsible for tasks or projects that involve the use of volunteers will identify appropriate tasks and time schedules for such volunteer activities, as well as make provisions for adequate supervision and evaluation. Volunteers will not be used to provide transportation for school-sponsored activities.
All persons wishing to volunteer must contact the Principal or other individual designated by the Superintendent or Principal. Volunteers who will be in any of the District schools for more than five (5) days in a school year must complete a volunteer application form. The application form will require the volunteer applicant to disclose any criminal convictions. The volunteer must submit a copy of their driver’s license with the application, which will be checked through the Raptor System.
Additionally, any individual who is volunteering as a coach, club advisor, or overnight trip chaperone must be fingerprinted and approved by the Board in advance.
The District will retain a complete record of all information obtained through the application process for the same period of time it retains information regarding District employees.
All volunteers are required to act in accordance with District policies, regulations, and school rules. Critical policies, including Student Harrassment and Bullying Prevention and Intervention, HIV/AIDS, Code of Conduct, and Sexual Harassment in the Workplace will be provided as part of volunteer orientational materials. Any staff member who supervises volunteers may ask any volunteer who violates District policies, regulations, or school rules to leave school grounds, and should report the action to the Principal or designee.
Each Principal will be responsible for maintaining a current and complete list of all active volunteers and their assignments.
