High School Credit for College Courses
High school credit will be awarded to students who enroll in approved college courses pursuant to the following criteria:
Courses comparable to core or sequence courses required for graduation will not be approved unless the student’s class year has graduated.
Courses of a remedial nature shall not be approved.
Courses whose content is comparable to high school courses already taken or which could be scheduled at the school prior to graduation shall not be approved.
Courses offered by non-accredited institutions shall not be approved.
Courses taken without prior approval by the School Counselor and High School Principal shall not be accepted. However, if a student’s class year has graduated, college courses taken without prior approval may be considered for high school credit.
Students currently enrolled in high school who wish to apply for high school credit for college courses must obtain an academic advisor who is a high school faculty member from a related discipline. The advisor must sign the application and evaluation forms and must be submitted to the School Counselor.
The number of college courses in which a student may participate during each school year shall be subject to the approval of the Superintendent/designee and the High School Principal. The course content, equivalency of instruction, and time requirements shall be approved in advance by the Principal and the Superintendent. In the case of students with disabilities, the above must also be approved by the Committee on Special Education (CSE).
Three to five college credits shall be equivalent to one-half unit of high school credit. Six college credits shall be equivalent to one unit of high school credit.
For purposes of this policy, a “unit” is a year’s work in a subject requiring 180 minutes of instruction per week throughout the school year or the equivalent.
The costs for any and all such higher education shall be borne by the individual student.
High school credit shall not be granted for any college course for which a student receives a failing grade.
