New Board Member Orientation and Training

The Board and the Superintendent or designee shall assist each new Board member-elect to become familiar with and to understand the Board's functions, policies and procedures, and the District's operation before taking office. Each Board member-elect shall, as soon as possible:


  • be given access to selected materials in digital form covering the function of the Board and the District, including (a) policy manual, (b) copies of key reports prepared during the previous year, (c) the School Law handbook, (d) minutes of Board meetings of the previous year, (e) latest financial report of the district, (and other materials which may be deemed helpful and informative)

  • be invited to attend all Board meetings and functions with the exception of executive sessions;

  • be invited to meet with the Superintendent;

  • be invited and encouraged to attend new school board member workshops.


All newly elected Board members are required to obtain training in fiscal oversight and governance, in accordance with state law, within the first year of their term. Each member shall demonstrate compliance with these requirements by filing with the District Clerk a certificate of completion of such courses issued by the provider. Actual and necessary expenses incurred in complying with this requirement shall be a charge against the District.
