Student Teaching and Internships
Student Teaching and Related Service Internship Program
Student teachers and related service provider interns (“student teachers”) from local universities and colleges who wish to receive their student teaching experience in the District, shall follow the following process:
The student teacher who wishes to make a request for student teaching or internship within the District shall do so via email to the Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction. This email request must include a letter from the college/university stating clearly defined goals and policies, time requirements and expected teaching and learning experiences.
The Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction will share the request with the appropriate building administrator who will determine interest from faculty regarding their desire to serve as a cooperating teacher.
All potential student teachers will be interviewed by the Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction before placement is approved. This interview may also include the Director of Pupil Personnel Services, the building administrator, and the cooperating teacher.
Prior to beginning any student teaching experience, all student teachers must show evidence of fingerprinting through the New York State Education Department.
A cooperating faculty member must have appropriate qualifications and experience and will be assigned at the discretion of the Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction.
Student teachers shall not be used to assume teaching duties in lieu of the District's hiring of a substitute, to relieve teachers for administrative meetings called during their teaching times or to relieve teachers from their daily classroom responsibilities, unless under extreme emergency situations.
At no time shall a student teacher be left alone with a student. Cooperating faculty must remain in the class at all times when students are present.
Non-instructional Internships
All non-instructional interns must be approved by the Superintendent prior to beginning their internship.
Internships may not be for pay.
Internships may not be used to replace current staff or fill staffing vacancies.
