Halloween fast approaches, and with that, so does Jorvik, our annual Halloween weekender! Keep an eye out for information as it is released...
Welcome to Jorvik, our annual beginner-friendly weekender!
We’re so excited to bring you a whole weekend full of lively dance lessons, amazing socials and fascinating discussions. As always, we’ve brought together loads of incredible local teachers who are here to share with you their skill and passion in swing dance. We’ve also organised two awesome socials to kick back and relax after a long day of lessons.
This year we have a focused historical talk with musicologist Catherine Tackley and a community focused discussion group - to help us all engage more with both the heritage and development of swing.
We hope you enjoy it all!
See you on the 25th - 26th October 2025!
It doesn't feel possible but somehow it's that time already! Jorvik is just around the corner and tickets are OUT! Get yours via dancecloud now!
We have weekend passes that include lessons on Saturday and Sunday, the Saturday night social with a live band, and Sunday tea dance, as well as a historical talk from our guest speaker (to be properly introduced soon...)
Society members are eligible for a reduced price weekend ticket, as your memberships are invaluable for us to keep running our events! So make sure you get your £7 membership from our SU webpage, you'll have made back the price in one lesson and one Jorvik's time (so very much worth it!)
We also have social passes, which include both socials and the historical talk, and this year we're also trialling a 'one night only' ticket, which gives you entry to one of our socials (of your choice) and the historical talk.
When you get to dancecloud, you'll also see the option to add a donation to your ticket price. We try to keep our events affordable with rising costs each year, so any and all donations are hugely appreciated! Plus, keep your eyes peeled for our YuStart fundraising events and efforts, coming soon.
You'll also find the hosting form for the event, if that's something you're interested in!
UoY students! Remember that the SU offers Activities Access Grants too, which can help support you with costs like these. Check out https://yorksu.org/activities-access-grants to see if you're eligible.
So! Head over to dancecloud now, get your tickets, and make one of the web and pubs very jealous as she's on exchange in Italy and missing out on the event of the season...

A member of committee will be at the welcome desk to sign you in! You’ll be given a wristband - please wear them throughout the weekend as you will need them to attend both social dances and the Sunday tasters. If you would like to opt out of photo consent please mention when registering, and we will give you a red wristband. Please refrain from taking photos of people with a red wristband. Please make sure you register on all days that you attend as we need to know who is present in case of emergency.
If you have only purchased a social pass ticket, please register instead at the welcome desk at the social dance venue:
Saturday - Central Methodist
Sunday - Vanbrugh Dining
Ashley and Sarah started here ten years ago, and are now back as our wonderful teachers!
From Leeds, we have the incredible Rob and Tina!
Their repertoire has been created in collaboration with swing dancers to keep you dancing all night long - with seventeen members, this is certainly a wow-factor big band!
All our tasters are open level and taught by our fantastic teachers!
Discover the First swing ensemble dancing routine, which was choreographed by the icon, Frankie Manning, in the 1930s. It involves both solo and partnered sections and emphasises stops in the music.
Join a complementary taster looking at a different section of the First Stops routine. Each session is self contained so feel free to mix and match.
Try the swing dance of Balboa from Southern California which evolved simultaneously to Lindy hop but on the other coast. It’s developed under the restrictions of crowded ballrooms resulting in an elegant close-hold dance.
Come along to our taster where we explore solo Charleston and how to play with it in your social dancing!
Check out our Historical Talk, happening at 14:30 on Sunday, led by Professor Catherine Tackley!
We are also running our discussion group at 13:30 on Saturday in Hendrix Hall- we encourage everyone to come and discuss the longevity of swing, and how we can keep the community thriving. No matter your level of experience, we want to create open dialogue to encourage everyone to think about how we can better engage people in the community. Whilst we encourage everyone to speak, there is no pressure, and even if you just want to come to listen to everyone’s perspectives on building inter-community links, we welcome all perspectives.
Our Accessibility Lead is Clara, who unfortunately cannot be present at the weekender. If you have any concerns about the accessibility of the event that are not addressed here, please feel free to reach out to her by email via: swingdance@yorksu.org, or via the contact details on our accessibility doc.
Else, she is also available via our Messenger or Instagram pages: @uoyswingstagram, @uoyswingdance_events by message or call.
We have a nut-free policy in our social dance venues and in the classroom. We will also ensure that any food on offer is labelled with allergens and ingredients.
Useful info not covered elsewhere:
Toilets are available near both social dance locations, with step-free access. There is a disabled toilet in Central Methodist Church, and a ramp to access the hall. There is no quiet room at Central Methodist but there are multiple accessible doors opening onto a patio area. There will be chairs and tables at both social dance venues, and in the welfare rooms.
Check out the infopack for information on how to find rooms and quiet rooms, food and drink nearby, and lots more!
