Chinese New Year
Chinese New Year is an important Chinese festival. No matter how far away they live, families come together to celebrate. Firecrackers are set off and traditional folk activities are held in the streets. Red is considered lucky in Chinese culture. Therefore, people decorate their house with flowers and short poems written on red paper. Children and elderly people are given money in red envelopes.
Lantern Festival is a Chinese festival celebrated on the 15th day of the first lunar month. It is the first major festival after the Chinese New Year. The most important activity of the festival is watching various wonderful Chinese lanterns at night. Children usually carry lantern to temples and solve riddles.
In the old days only rich people could make lanterns, but now people make lanterns which are highly decorated. Many lanterns are shaped like animals. The lanterns are usually red to symbolize good fortune.
