Greenhill

What is Greenhill as a national YMCA centre trying to achieve?

Greenhill YMCA was established to provide outdoor and residential based services to young people from local YMCAs as well as from the wider youth, school and church sectors. As part of its mission it seeks to provide a range of quality adventure based activities that help young people to develop a variety of skills. The YMCA staff team is complimented by a large team of international volunteers who together facilitate nearly 10,000 young people annually to avail of the range of programmes and services it has to offer.

What were some of the outcomes for young people/ staff/volunteers as a result of your programme during the past year?

*9,000+ young people undertook either activity or residential programmes at Greenhill YMCA

*14 young people (18-22 yrs) completed one-year full-time training and volunteering programmes. Each completing 480 hours of training and 1440 hours of volunteering, achieving a range of leadership certifications to support outdoor learning including accredited qualifications in youth work and first-aid

*22 young people (15-17yrs) completed Assistant Leader Training and volunteered on the summer scheme

*Greenhill programmes and facilities supported the work of 256 separate youth, community and church groups

What were some of the significant developments during the past year?

One of the most potentially significant developments was a formal partnership with the Education Authority ( EA) which will see Greenhill YMCA running the Vocational Outdoor Learning Training ( VOLT) Initiative for up to 20 trainers. These young people will be equipped with a range of qualifications in outdoor skills as well as youth work skills.

Another important piece of work which was completed during the year was the drafting of plans to develop an Activity Hub which will allow a range of indoor activities to be offered as well as a conference space for up to 160 people. It is hoped that the funding will be in place for this project by late 2018.

In order to help cope with the increased demand for programmes at Greenhill and the associated paper work, a restructuring of the staff team took place during the year as well.
