Students Gather for Prayer at See You at the Pole

Students, teachers, parents, school administrators and members of the community gathered around the school flagpole for See You at the Pole. The event See You at the Pole is a gathering that is student-led, typically before the school day begins. The event is centered around prayer for the year, faith, unity, and a period of reflection. This year, See you at the Pole was led by the Fellowship of Christian Athletes members at Yorktown High School.
FCA President Paige DeLeon welcomed those who attended and introduced the organization’s officers, including Vice President Claire Person and secretaries Taylor Gips and Evelyn Merks. DeLeon explained that the morning would include Scripture readings, prayers and a closing recitation of the Lord’s Prayer.
The theme verse for the 2026 See You at the Pole event was Habakkuk 3:2, “ I have heard all about you, Lord. I am filled with awe by your amazing works. In this time of deep need, help us again as you did in years gone by. And in your anger remember your mercy.” The book of a Habakkuk opens with a prayer, where the prophet begins by pleading with God to act in the present like he has in the past, bringing down corrupt nations. Even when the world seemed to be falling apart, Habakkuk chose to trust in the covenant promise of God. In the same way, we can put our faith and hope in God and know that he is in control which calls on God to act in times of need while remembering mercy. The verse reflects the prophet Habakkuk’s decision to trust God even during difficult and uncertain times. Students were encouraged to remember that they, too, can place their faith and hope in God.
Throughout the gathering, FCA members took turns reading Scripture and leading prayers. Evelyn Merks read from 1 Chronicles 16:8 and 34, focusing on giving praise and thanks to God for His enduring love. Paige DeLeon later read Philippians 4:6, which encourages people to bring their worries and requests to God through prayer and thanksgiving.
The prayers also focused on the Yorktown Independent School District and the community. Students prayed for peace, protection, guidance, wisdom, love, joy and unity throughout the school. They also asked for compassion toward others and encouraged those gathered to let their faith guide their actions.
Claire Person read Psalm 8:1-4, reflecting on the greatness of God and His care for humanity. Taylor Gips then read from 2 Chronicles 7:14, a passage calling people to humble themselves, pray, seek God and turn from wrongdoing. Claire closed with a powerful prayer saying, “Lord, we give thanks and praise to you. You know our needs before we ask. Thank you for being here with us this morning”.
The gathering concluded with the Lord’s Prayer, led by Person, allowing students and community members to pray together. DeLeon then offered a closing prayer, thanking everyone who attended and asking for blessings, peace and guidance for the school community.
See You at the Pole provided an opportunity for members of the YISD community to come together in prayer and reflection. Through Scripture, prayer and fellowship, the event emphasized faith, gratitude, unity and hope for the school year ahead.
