The Yorktown Kitty Kats battled through four hard-fought sets Friday night, overcoming the Woodsboro Lady Eagles to claim a 3-1 victory and improve their district record to 3-1.
Yorktown came out of the gates with strong energy, setting the tone early and taking the opening set 25-20. The Kitty Kats controlled the momentum and showed their determination to start the night on the right foot. Woodsboro answered back in the second set, however, edging Yorktown 26-24 in a tightly contested battle. With the match tied at one set a piece, the Kitty Kats were forced to regroup and find another gear. That response came in the third set.
Yorktown pushed back with renewed intensity, fighting through long rallies and refusing to let the second-set loss dictate the remainder of the match. When asked how everyone stayed motivated when the game got tough, Paige Deleon said, “We just continued communicating with each other even at our lowest points.” She also pointed to the team's resilience, saying, “We all lifted each other up throughout the game, reminding each other that everything was going to be okay.” Deleon said her favorite moment from the game was, “When we became out of system, and I set the ball to Claire Person, allowing her to get a kill that instilled momentum in us that continued through the rest of the match”. The Kitty Kats captured the third set 25-19, putting themselves just one set away from closing out the district victory.
The fourth set brought another battle between the two teams, but Yorktown continued to apply pressure. With the match on the line, Lorelai Gowens delivered a fabulous serving performance, providing the spark the Kitty Kats needed to finish the match strong. Her serving helped generate the momentum that carried Yorktown through the final stretch of the set. Palyn Koopmann highlighted her thoughts, saying throughout the fourth set she felt that in order to take the set, the team needed to “stay calm and get back to the basics, especially serving and passing”. She then went on to say that if “we could execute those fundamentals and stay focused, I knew we could make a run and close the gap.”
The Kitty Kats ultimately secured the fourth set 25-22, completing the comeback and earning the 3-1 district win. When Coach Wagner was asked what she was most proud of after securing the win, she said, “I am most proud of our girls for coming back from a loss in set 2 and taking control of the game. Our serving and our defense were our two strengths this game, with 11 total aces and 107 total digs.” She went on to say, “The girls fought hard and rallied every point.” Wagner highlighted Gracie Stehling’s impact on the court, as she recorded 18 kills throughout 4 sets to help lead the Kitty Kats to an exciting victory. After dropping the second set by just two points, Yorktown responded by winning the final two sets and showed the resilience needed to close out a challenging district matchup.
With the victory, the Kitty Kats move to 3-1 in district play, carrying valuable momentum into their next match as they continue their district campaign. Wagner stated after the game that throughout the second round of district play, she “Hopes to minimize serving errors in order to give the defense a chance to make a mistake, and the offense a way to score extra points.” Junior Palyn Koopmann noted that she thinks the Kitty Kats “can win out in the second half of district, and definitely be competitive in the playoffs”.
