Dragons Den 2024
Designing Real Solutions for Real Problems
Sustainability and Change
Grade 8 YIS students are completing an interdisciplinary project-based unit in English, Design and Individuals & Societies where they are inquiring into the statement "Understanding a problem is necessary in developing a solution that generates sustainable impact in a community".
In order to explore this question students have been collaborating in groups to invent and design a solution to address a sustainable development goal of their choosing.

FINALISTS 2024
From 8-1: Flower Power and CDA (Cambodia Demining Activists)

For this inquiry, students will be identifying an issue linking to an SDG, and working as a team to design and pitch an idea for a solution that is meaningful and impactful at our school, in Japan or globally. Whether it be creating a product, or improving an existing system or service, your idea needs to contribute to the solution of the SDG you chose.
1
Identify a specific issue linking to an SDG
2
Research about the issue; its cause(s) and impact(s)
3
Identify the problem & location you wish to focus on
4
Identify the stakeholders or factors that would go into creating the solution
5
Use the design cycle to develop and prototype a solution to the issue
6
Explain the contributions, values and limitations of the solution, from the perspective of a stakeholder
7
Using persuasive techniques, pitch your idea to a panel of experts and convince the panel of the viability or sustainability of the solution
Goal
To work in teams to design a solution for an SDG issue, considering the needs of those impacted by the issue. The solution can be local or global, but it should be feasible for YIS students to actually DO.
