Special Learning Centre

The Special Learning Centre is a warm and friendly environment which supports the needs of those learners with specific needs. The main focus is on supporting learners with additional literacy and numeracy skills, as well supporting learners with their well-being. Learners are withdrawn from mainstream subjects for small intervention work groups for 6 hours per fortnight. All work is conducted in a nurturing manner where all learners are happy to learn in a relaxed environment.

Resources which are used in the SLC to support learners are:

Numeracy:

Numicon - which is a resource supporting numeracy through a visual tiles resource.

Dominoes, a resource which can be used for Additions, Subtraction and division

A pack of playing cards, again another visual aid for learners to use to help support additions, subtractions and multiplications.

Learners will also learn how to tell the time and learn money skills .

Literacy:

Literacy is implemented throughout all lessons in the SLC.

To support literacy learners will engage with comprehension work through a resource called Cloze. Story spinners which enables learners to use their imagination through 5 key areas for language skills

Lexia:

Is an online learning resource whereby learners completes aspects of all areas of literacy. This is tracked and learners can earn certificates when completing a topic.

  • Touch typing skills to practice speed and accuracy.

  • Hand writing skills via a work booklet.

  • Ready every day which is noted in a learners reading log.

  • Spell well series which focuses on tricky words CVC words and techniques how to spell words.

  • Learners will also have the opportunity to engage with daily topics , for example what is in the news a little like circle time.

Emotional Support

We also offer support for learners' emotional needs, which learners will have the opportunity to work on their emotions through a booklet called let's talk for teenagers.

This has proven to be successful to raise learners self-esteem and understanding their emotions.

Learners are also provided with a safe space to deregulate from mainstream lessons, so that they can have opportunity to refocus and structure their learning through nature walks and relaxation techniques.

The special learning centre is also a base for break time clubs where learners can feel relaxed and engage with peers in a happy environment. This is staffed at all times.
