What is Numeracy?
A report by HMCI in 2016/17 states that;
"Numeracy is an essential life skill that enables learners to apply numerical facts, skills and reasoning to real life problems". This means that learners understand how Maths is used in the real world and are able to use their skills to make the best possible decisions.
Here at YHT we are dedicated to helping your child reach their potential,so that they develop those necessary skills to become happy, successful and confident learners.
What Numeracy support is offered?
Weekly support is given to learners who need extra help with the 4 basic areas of Maths:
Addition
Subtraction
Multiplication
Division
Support is also given to those learners who need extra help with:
Times tables
Using money
Telling the time
As well as other common topics such as area of shapes, and fractions, decimals and percentages .
How do we identify learners needing support?
Learners are identified as needing extra support by using a number of assessments including previous National Numeracy test results and class based tests. Learners are often identified for extra support by class teachers, or as a request from a Parent or Guardian.
How do lessons work?
Numeracy lessons offer help in lots of different ways from watching and interacting with online resources such as Corbett Maths, group work, completing worksheets and playing lots of different Numeracy games. Sessions generally have small groups of around 8-10 learners of the same ability who work together to improve their skills. 1 to 1 and 1 to 2 sessions are also available depending on the level of help needed. Working in small groups allows for more individual help to be given and are generally carried out in a friendly and relaxed setting.
National Numeracy Tests
In years 7-9 learners sit their National Numeracy and Literacy tests in the summer term. Help and support is offered to learners to prepare them for these tests. As part of the National Literacy and Numeracy Framework, all KS3 learners (Y7, Y8 & Y9) in Wales will be expected to do one reading and two numeracy tests.
To ensure our learners are prepared for these tests, we organise practice sessions for KS3, and also host an information evening where parents/guardians and learners, are welcome to come along to ask questions and receive relevant resource packs, over tea and biscuits!!
