At Ysgol Harri Tudur Mrs Cath Cumine and Ms Lynda Gould are here to give extra support to our Free School Meal Learners, with their learning journey through school.
During Year 6, Ms Gould visits our Primary School learners as part of the Transition process. We complete fun activities on their thoughts and worries about moving to a new school.
Year 7 attend small intervention groups for Literacy and Numeracy. We allocate a Sixth Form Mentor to help them settle into school and get used to the new routine. They help in the Refectory and Break times to check in with learners. We have found this to be beneficial as some learners respond better to learners than staff. In the Spring Term we ask Year 7 to complete a Well Being questionnaire.
Year 8 Learners are given support with choosing their Options. Through Parents Evenings and meeting with learners.
Organised Career Fairs and University Visits are available for Year 9 Learners. This enables them to make better informed choices for their Further Education
Year 10 is where the focus of our support begins, in preparation for their GSCE Exams. To engage the boys in particular, we have an informal 'Boys Breakfast' once a week for 4 weeks with Ms Gould. Over bacon rolls and a hot drink, we discuss any issues in school. If learners have concerns about the exams or college etc these questions can be resolved. Our school Careers Officer will meet with all Year 10 learners during the first term to discuss their further education choice after leaving school. Sixth Form, College or Apprenticeships for example. As part of our support programme Year 10 are offered Coursework Intervention Days on Saturdays, in core subjects areas. These are informal and very well attended days.
This is the time during Year 11 where the core focus of learning and support happens. They attend lessons with Ms Gould for extra support and tuition on their Maths and English. Learners can work on all lessons during this time, and catch up on coursework, Welsh Bacc or any missed work. We arrange aspiration talks and meetings. Ms Gould can help complete college applications. Arrange interviews with apprenticeship companies or help to complete personal statement for sixth form.
Mrs Cumine and Ms Gould conduct Success Clinics in the Autumn term. Parents are invited in to school with their child to discuss how they feel they are progressing.
During our Easter Break Year 11 Learners are invited in to school for extra tuition in Core Subjects.
Homework/Revision Club is available for Year 11 every Monday after school in Learning Mentor's Room until 4 pm.
External GCSE conferences are held during the Spring Term. On separate days we focus on Maths, English and Science. Learners really engage with this experience. It's a non-uniform day with lunch provided.
Free school meals will only be provided for learners who receive or whose parents receive one of the following benefits: Income Support. Income Based Jobseekers Allowance (IBJSA). ... Child Tax Credits only, with an annual household Income of under £16,190 *
This is under review for the new Universal Credit. For more information Contact PCC County Hall Haverfordwest.

Coping with Exam Stress
This can be a very difficult time for both learners and their families. It's normal to feel some nerves when exams are approaching. We work on ways to cope, so stress doesn't affect learners revision or their health.
Scroll down for more advice....
Exams are stressful for Everyone
You won't be alone in feeling under pressure about exams - it's likely your classmates are also finding this time stressful too
A small amount of stress can be good for you - it can motivate you to do better or help you focus on overcoming a difficult situation
However, too much stress can negatively impact your health. It's important to recognise the signs of stress so you can do something about them
Signs of Stress include:
A loss of appetite
Sudden weight loss or gain
Feeling anxious
Difficulty concentrating
Feeling emotional
Struggling to sleep
There are ways to help with Stress....
Go outside for exercise and fresh air - it will help you clear your head
Set aside time to meet up with your friends when you are not revising
Give yourself relaxation time - listen to music , watch TV or doze outside in the sun
Keep up with your hobbies and doing activities you enjoy
Eating and Sleeping well can also help to reduce stress
Talk about how you are feeling
Talking to friends, family and teachers can really help you air your anxieties and come up with a way to deal with your stress. If you don't feel comfortable talking to people you know, there are support services and helplines you can talk to confidentially.
WAYS TO MAKE IT WORSE!
Don't revise late into the evening - this will affect your sleep and make you tired
Not taking adequate breaks will make your revision time less effective
Don't set unrealistic targets or you will always disappoint yourself
Bottling up your stress is no laughing matter - tell people how you feel...
Exams are important, but they are not worth affecting your health. Make sure you take time out from revision to do things you enjoy - not only will this make you happier, it will make revising easier.

Support during the exam weeks
Our learners can come into school early for breakfast before their exam. Good nutrition before an exam is vital. This is a time to check if they have all the equipment they need for the exam. Stationary and calculators are available to use. This is a good last minute revision session too!
