Broadhaven

Broadhaven is a welcoming centre, based on nurture group principles that supports learners holistically from years 7 to 11 who are struggling emotionally, socially or academically or have become disengaged with school. In our KS3 room, we work with learners to develop life skills, literacy, numeracy and social communication. We also work on confidence boosting, anger management, anxiety management and behaviour issues. These skills will help to support them in their lessons and day to day lives. At KS4, we continue to work on these skills but work more academically, with several vocational qualifications offered and support through GCSEs.

Key Stage 3

Our class offer a short-term, inclusive, focused intervention that works in the long term. Children attend the KS3 room but remain an active part of their main class group, spend appropriate times within our class according to their need and typically return full time to their own class within two to four terms. We assess learning and social and emotional needs and give the necessary help to remove the barriers to learning. As the children learn academically and socially they develop confidence, become responsive to others, learn self-respect and take pride in behaving well and in achieving.

Emotional Literacy Support

What is Emotional Literacy?

  • Understanding and coping with the feelings of ourselves and others

  • Developing high self-esteem and positive interactions with others

  • Being emotionally literate helps children focus better on their learning

How do we deliver Emotional Literacy?

  • A regular slot during the school week

  • In a quiet/private area

  • Sessions can be individual or in a small group, tailored to the child’s needs

  • Sessions are fun and might include role-play, puppets, board games, art and

  • crafts and stories

This support is delivered in a caring, relaxed, compassionate and fun way.

Art and Crafts

We use Art and Craft because:-

1. Crafting almost always provides a stable foundation for future learning.

2. One of the most important aspects of learning to craft is the self-esteem boost. To teach a child to sew, knit or draw for instance, is to teach them to create. It is about showing them they are in control of their environment. Holding a familiar tool in their hand will build a great deal of confidence.

3. Through crafts children can learn self-regulation. Projects that require drying, require also waiting. What is cool though, is that waiting will be worth it and they will be satisfied with the end result of all their efforts.

5. Crafts teach flexibility. Opposite to maths, there is no wrong way to approach crafts. They teach children that there is more than one way to utilize their creativity and talents and there are always more than one right answers. Isn't it the same in life?

6. Crafts promote bilateral coordination. This means that they use both their hands, which will be useful later in life.

7. Arts and crafts are a great platform for self-expression. Just like all of us, kids need to express themselves and as they grow their identity will be more in need of manifestation. Through arts and crafts they will be able to communicate it visually in a very healthy way.

8. It helps problem-solving and critical-thinking skills, while encountering with different challenges and projects. Solving these will teach resourcefulness.
