The Arts department at SMK includes the disciplines of Art, Drama, Music, and Photography. These disciplines are integral to the holistic growth of students by fostering creativity, risk taking, and critical thinking skills – necessary skills for any pathway.
Arts courses encourage students to use their God-given talents in ways that promote both personal growth and social expression. Students can get involved in the arts at SMK by taking a variety of courses in grades 9 through 12 or by getting involved in co-curricular activities.
Department Staff:
Ms. Trapani is a passionate educator and arts advocate with over 15 years of teaching experience at the YCDSB. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Theatre and a Bachelor of Education, both from York University. As the Department Head of Arts, she has been a driving force in fostering creativity and artistic excellence among her students.
Throughout her career, Ms. Trapani has played a vital role in numerous productions. She has directed shows such as Oz, Back to the 80’s, and Twinderella, while also assisting with other memorable productions. Her leadership and vision have created countless opportunities for students to shine and grow.
Ms. Trapani believes wholeheartedly in the transformative power of drama education. She emphasizes that the skills gained in the arts—collaboration, communication, and creative problem-solving—are invaluable assets for any future pathway.
With a passion for creativity and self-expression, Mr. Viaes has been inspiring students for over 20 years in the classroom. A graduate of the University of Waterloo with a degree in Arts and Honours Specialist in Visual Arts. Mr. Viaes believes that art is a powerful tool for both personal growth and understanding the world around us. His goal is to lead and inspire students in a way that builds confidence in their individual abilities.
Through innovative lessons and hands-on projects, Mr. Viaes encourages students to explore their artistic potential while developing their technical skills. He fosters a supportive and collaborative environment where every student can feel confident in expressing their unique vision.
Mr. Viaes has been a consistent, supportive and positive influence as a visual arts educator.
Ms. Jennifer Doria graduated from York University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Music. She earned her Bachelor of Education degree from the University of Western Ontario, where she was the recipient of the Dawson Woodburn Memorial Award. She also holds a Music Honours Specialist, and actively practices music within the community through Music Ministry at St. Mary Immaculate Parish, and beyond.
With over 20 years of teaching experience, mostly in Music, Ms. Doria has had various bands and choirs participate in provincial, and national music festivals and competitions. She has received recognition as a music director from the Ontario Band Association, and was the recipient of the Music Alive Festival’s “Outstanding Music Director” award. Ms. Doria was the Vocal Music Director of Jesus Christ Superstar, and Grease, and has been involved in many capacities for many shows and performances over the years.
Ms. Doria has been an active member of the Ontario Music Educators Association, and the Ontario Band Association throughout her career. She continues to advocate for Music Education, as its benefits to youth, young adults, and the community at large are beneficial to both the individual and society. Music is a necessary expression of our humanity, requiring discipline and critical thinking, and creating connection in our ever-changing world.
