Marek A. Yarbrough obtained his bachelor’s degree in mathematics Magna Cum Laude from Hawaii Pacific University, in Honolulu, Hawaii, while serving twenty years with the United States Coast Guard.  During his career, Marek served as a navigator aboard HC-130H aircraft for search and rescue missions in the Caribbean and throughout the Pacific.  He later served as an Intelligence Watch Officer in Alameda, California, where he delivered briefings for staff, including Congressional and Cabinet members, regarding the Maritime Fusion Intelligence Center's technical and operational capabilities. 

Retiring from the USCG, Marek attended Lincoln Law School of San Jose, California, where he obtained his juris doctorate in 2009.

Marek pursued an advanced legal degree at Golden Gate University, School of Law, San Francisco, California, and obtained a Master of Laws (LLM) in United States Legal Studies with a curriculum focus on Estate Planning and Taxation.   

While attending law school, Marek maintained a business providing IT services for numerous law firms in the South Bay.

Marek started his law practice in Newark, California, in 2011, providing estate planning and trust administration services.  

In 2016, Marek joined The Steven L. Yarbrough Law Offices which grew into The Yarbrough Law Offices.  

Marek provides legal counsel on trust and estate litigation, estate planning, wills, trusts, special needs trusts, long-term care planning, Medi-Cal, and other public benefits planning. 

In 2021, Marek received a Certificate of Estate Planning from Golden Gate University. 

In 2022, Marek was recognized as an Elite Lawyer. 

In 2023, Marek was again recognized as an Elite Lawyer and also as a Lawyer of Distinction in Estate Planning Law.

Marek is an active member of the California State Bar and the Silicon Valley Bar Association, in Santa Clara County.

Steven L. Yarbrough, a California Super Lawyer,  obtained his bachelor’s degree in journalism at the University of Missouri-Columbia.  After more than 20 years as a practicing newspaperman, he graduated from law school at the University of California’s Hastings College of Law in San Francisco in 1995. 

Steve spent five years of intensive trial practice as a court-appointed defense attorney in Del Norte County, California.  He handled approximately 300 adult and juvenile felony and misdemeanor cases per year, including major felony jury trials, three-strikes cases, and homicides to verdict with several re-trials to verdict.  In addition, he was responsible for preliminary hearings, pre-trial evidentiary motions and related hearings. 

Steve was a partner at the general-practice firm of Cochran, Follett & Yarbrough, in Crescent City, California, which provided legal services to local governments, including the Crescent City Harbor District, Del Norte County Hospital District, several water districts, and the Del Norte County Solid Waste Authority, plus family, land-lord tenant, business, and real property law.  He was court-appointed trial attorney for numerous juvenile dependency cases, representing children, parents and grandparents and was court appointed to represent conservatees in LPS and probate conservatorship hearings. 

At the appellate level, Steve has participated in both oral argument and appellate briefs and writs before the California Court of Appeal. 

In April of 2000, he joined Jann Besson in Los Altos to form the partnership of Besson & Yarbrough where they worked as a legal team protecting the rights of elders for more than 16 years..

In June 2016, Steve formed The Yarbrough Law Offices with his son, Marek A. Yarbrough.  He now focuses exclusively on mediation of elder law disputes, probate, trust and estate litigation, conservatorships, and patient rights. 

Steve is a certified mediator focusing on trust and estate disputes.  

Steve is an inactive member of the California State Bar and its Trusts and Estates Section. He is a past-president of the Silicon Valley Bar Association, having served as chair of the Education Sub-Committee and as chair of the Probate, Trusts and Estates Executive Committee. Steve is a former member of the California Advocates for Nursing Home Reform attorney referral panel.  He was a member of the Santa Clara County Estate Planning Council, and is among court-appointed counsel representing conservatees in Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties.
