Encaustic Paintings

By Shannon Mello

Hi There! Please take a look on Instagram (melloencaustics) and Facebook (Encaustic Art by Shannon Mello) for my most recent and updated works. Thanks so much for looking!

Encaustic paintings use melted beeswax and pigment rather than traditional paint. The melted wax, much like a paste, is applied in layers onto wood (in my case) and fused with a heat gun with every layer. The majority of my work includes five to eight different layers. I absolutely love experimenting with moving the layers and completely surrendering to perfection. You will notice the images are sometimes "broken" and distorted. This is due to the fusing process and is a wild card each and every time.

The following artwork is featured in Colorado Springs at Urban Steam (amazing coffee), Goat Patch Brewing Co (try the wheat beer), and the Ivy Wild School which has local farm to table goodness. In October, work will be featured at Good Karma Cafe in Manitou Springs as well!

Once and a while you come across a piece that speaks to you. This piece to the left did just that. I had to take it home and keep it.

The image to the left gives you a good idea of the depth of my pieces. Usually the artwork is done on 1/2" thick piece of wood. The background (base) is usually the same. The frames are usually 2" in depth.

Many pieces are done on reclaimed wood brought back to life. I'm a thrifter, with no shame. If the surface can hold wax, it'll do. Some of my work will soon be featured in different businesses in the Colorado Springs area! This is very exciting to me as I love to see the support for Arts in our community!
